The Maui News  An Oahu judge gave final approval on Friday to a $328 million settlement that will provide compensation for 2,515 beneficiaries who sued the state over its handling of the Hawaiian homes program.  First Circuit Judge Lisa Cataldo gave final approval to the settlement with the state, which puts to rest a 1999 lawsuit filed over breaches of trust by the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, according to a news release.

A consumer group Thursday asked the U.S. government to ban an AstraZeneca cholesterol drug approved only months ago, citing reports of dangerous reactions and one death. The prescription drug, Crestor, was introduced in Canada in February 2003 and in Europe in March 2003. The drug hit the U.S. market last September. Since the drug’s launch, seven patients who took it developed life-threatening muscle deterioration, and nine experienced kidney failure or damage, consumer group Public Citizen said.

Jim Nabors, the actor known for his role as the beloved “Gomer Pyle” on television comedies and for his booming operatic voice, has died. He was 87. Nabors, who starred as Gomer Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” in the early 1960s and went on to have his own spinoff show, died Thursday, husband Stan Cadwallader, who was by his side, told The Associated Press. Nabors died peacefully in his home in Hawaii, Cadwallader said.
